GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia 197-pound senior Brent Jones has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after two wins over conference opponents, including the 12th-ranked nationally-ranked wrestler in his weight class.
It is the second ACC Wrestler of the Week honor of the season for Jones, who was also named on Nov. 17.
The now 19th-ranked Jones picked up two wins for Virginia last weekend, including an upset of Dennis Drury of North Carolina – one of only two wins by an ACC wrestler over a ranked foe last week (the other was Virginia’s Shawn Harris’ 5-4 upset of No. 6 Thomas Scotton at 157 in the UNC match). Jones also posted a 13-5 major decision against Virginia Tech’s Chris Penny. Jones improved to 18-8 on the year with his two victories.
ACC teams resume action Friday night with three non-league matches – including a battle between No. 15 Virginia Tech and No. 7 Central Michigan in Blacksburg. No. 19 Virginia travels to Rutgers, while 11th-ranked Maryland wrestles at George Mason.
Saturday finds both Duke and North Carolina wrestling in the Appalachian State Open at Boone, N.C., while Virginia travels to Princeton. Conference action resumes on Sunday, with Duke and Virginia Tech meeting at Glen Allen, Va.
