GREENSBORO – Duke’s Henrique Cunha has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and heads up the 2010 All-ACC team, as announced today by Commissioner John D. Swofford.
Cunha, a native of Jau, Brazil, was also selected as the ACC Freshman of the Year in balloting by the league’s 12 head coaches. Brian Boland, who guided Virginia to its fourth straight unbeaten regular season in conference play and the No. 1 spot in the national rankings, was voted ACC Coach of the Year for the third straight season and the fourth time overall.
Boland’s Cavaliers placed a conference-high four players on this year’s 18-member All-ACC team, including three-time selection Sanam Singh and repeat selection Michael Shabaz. Florida State’s Jean-Yves Aubone, Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez, North Carolina’s Clay Donato, Virginia Tech’s Yoann Re and Wake Forest’s Steve Forman are other three-time selections on this year’s All-ACC team.
Duke’s Cunha finished the regular season undefeated in ACC play at the No. 1 spot, posting an 8-0 record. He owns an 18-3 record against ranked opponents. Cunha has won 15 straight matches and is 30-5 overall heading into the ACC Men’s Championship, which gets under way today at Cary (N.C.) Tennis Park.
A six-time ACC Player of the Week, Cunha joined Blue Devil teammate and fellow All-ACC selection Reid Carleton in setting a Duke record for most doubles victories in a season (35-5). The two posted an 8-1 record vs. ACC opposition.
Boland coached the Cavaliers to their seventh straight regular-season ACC title, and Virginia (32-1) enters ACC Championship play with a record 58 consecutive wins against conference opposition. The Cavaliers’ 32 wins this season tie a school record, set in 2008 and matched last year.
The ACC Men’s Tennis Championship opens today with four first-round matches. Play continues throughout the weekend, concluding with Sunday’s 11 a.m. title match.
