GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland freshman Vlad Stefan and North Carolina junior Jose Hernandez have been named the final Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Players of the Week for the 2012 season.
Stefan posted an unbeaten week in singles and doubles, including singles wins over two ranked opponents, and led the Terps to an upset win over 18th-ranked North Carolina in Sunday’s regular-season finale. Hernandez posted a pair of singles wins on the No. 1 court, including a victory over the nation’s No. 4 player in the Tar Heels’ come-from-behind 4-3 road victory at fifth-ranked Duke last Wednesday.
Stefan, a native of Bucharest, Romania, went 4-0 over with two singles victories over ranked opponents. His efforts helped Maryland score a 5-2 win over North Carolina on Sunday. It marked the Terps’ first win over North Carolina since 1990 and earned their fourth ACC victory, the program’s most since 1990. For the week, Stefan knocked off two ranked foes in Duke’s No. 26 Chris Mengel and UNC’s No. 103 Brennan Boyajian to improve his record to 20-11 this year, and 10-9 in dual play. Stefan has six wins over nationally ranked opponents this year. Stefan also paired with junior Tommy Laine for two doubles victories. The tandem is now 13-3 this spring.
Hernandez, of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, was honored for the second time in three weeks. The 33rd-ranked Hernandez’s 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over fourth-ranked Henrique Cunha helped spark a closing flurry that lifted the Tar Heels to the one-point win over the Blue Devils. Earlier in the match, the 30th-ranked team of Hernandez and Joey Burkhardt had combined for an 8-1 win over the No. 28 team of Cunha and Mengel in No. 1 doubles. Hernandez was a bright spot for UNC in Sunday’s loss at Maryland, scoring a singles win over Maros Horny on the No. 1 court.
