April 13, 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C.– Duke freshman Henrique Cunha has again been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after a perfect week that included two singles wins over a pair of fellow ranked players.

It marks the fifth time this season the Jau, Brazil, native has won or shared the ACC Player of the Week honor. The 11th-ranked Cunha owns singles wins over the nation’s top four players this season, including Georgia Tech’s No. 4-ranked Guillermo Gomez in last weekend’s action.

Cunha went undefeated in both singles and doubles with a 3-0 record in each as Duke was 3-0 on the week. He has now won 12 straight singles contests and 15 straight doubles matches with perfect 5-0 (singles) and 6-0 (doubles) records in ACC play.

In addition to his 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 4 Guillermo Gomez on the No.1 court, he also defeated No. 42 Tripper Carleton of Wake Forest in a third set tiebreaker (6-4, 6-7, 7-6) with Duke trailing 3-2. The Blue Devils went on to defeat the Demon Deacons by a 4-3 score. Gomez also teamed with Reid Carleton to down Wake’s No. 14 Iain Atkinson and Steven Forman, 9-7, in doubles for the pair’s eighth win over a ranked team this season.

Cunha’s week also included two more doubles wins with Carleton and a 6-3, 6-3 win over Clemson’s Derek DiFazio in No. 1 singles.
