GREENSBORO, N.C. - Duke freshman Henrique Cunha has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the fourth time this season after an unbeaten week that included singles and doubles wins over highly-ranked opposition.
The 11th-ranked Cunha posted a 2-0 singles record and 3-0 mark in doubles while leading the 27th-ranked Blue Devils to two ACC wins and a narrow 4-3 loss against No. 1-ranked Virginia. Cunha defeated Virginia's third-ranked Michael Shabaz, 6-3, 6-3, for his 13th win over a ranked opponent and third over a top five player this season. Cunha also defeated No. 38 Yoann Re of Virginia Tech, 6-2, 6-2. Cunha, a native of Jau, Brazil, has won nine straight matches in singles and is 24-5 overall.
Cunha and Reid Carleton went 3-0 in doubles on the week, helping Duke win the doubles point in all three matches. The duo has won 12 straight matches and is just the third doubles team in Duke history with 30 victories (30-4). One of their victories came over the nation's No. 11-ranked doubles team, Virginia's Drew Courtney and Shabaz. It was the seventh win over a ranked opponent for the third-ranked Blue Devil pair, which improved to 13-1 in dual matches.
