GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sophomores Henrique Cunha of Duke and Jose Hernandez of North Carolina have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Co-Players of the Week after each scored victories vs. ranked opposition on the No. 1 court last weekend.
Cunha's week included a win over No. 5 Michael Shabaz of Virginia in straight sets, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3. The victory was the sixth-ranked Cunha's second win over a top 10 opponent this season and ninth of his career. Cunha added a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 50 Luka Somen of Virginia Tech to continue his undefeated ACC singles career. The Jau, Brazil native, is now 14-0 in two seasons and 6-0 this year. He also has a current nine-match winning streak going and is 28-5 overall.
In doubles, Cunha and Reid Carleton defeated No. 66 Will Beck and Pedro Graber of Virginia Tech by an 8-4 score. The Duke pair improved to 28-4 with a 16-2 dual match record.
UNC's Hernandez's 6-3, 6-3 win against Luka Somen on Friday helped propel the Tar Heels to a comeback victory over the Hokies, and he recorded a huge upset of Virginia's Shabaz, in a three-set win on Sunday. Hernandez has played a leading role in the Tar Heels' recent hot streak that saw UNC win seven straight matches - including five ACC matchups -- before falling to top-ranked Virginia on Sunday.
Hernandez, of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, entered the weekend ranked 38th nationally in Division I singles.
The honor is the second of season for both players. Hernandez was named the ACC Player of the Week on Jan. 18, and Cunha was cited on Feb. 1. Cunha was a six-time Player of the Week as a freshman in 2010.
