GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina senior Stefan Hardy and Virginia senior Michael Shabaz have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Co-Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet after defeating ranked opponents and leading their teams to impressive road wins.
Hardy provided key wins over ranked opponents in singles and in doubles as the 30th-ranked Tar Heels stunned No. 3 Texas with a 5-2 road win on March 8. The 121st-ranked Hardy defeated No. 114 Vasko Miladenov 6-3, 7-5 on the No. 3 court and teamed with Joey Burkhardt for an 8-5 win over No. 23 Kellen Damico and David Holiner at No. 2 doubles. UNC's victory snapped a 29-match home winning streak for the Longhorns that dated back to April 2, 2009. The victory was the Tar Heels' highest ranked road win since defeating #2 Georgia on April 2, 1994.
Shabaz, of Fairfax, Va., led Virginia to road wins at No. 56 LSU and No. 28 Baylor in its first two outdoor matches of the season. Playing on the No.1 court, the 10th-ranked Shabaz scored a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 69 Neal Skupski of LSU and defeated Baylor's No. 22 John Peers 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Shabaz also teamed with Drew Courtney for a win at No. 1 doubles in the LSU match before the pair saw their 19-match winning steak snapped against Baylor. The top-ranked Cavaliers' team win over Baylor was only the ninth home loss for the Bears in the past 10 years.
The ACC Player of the Week honor is the first for Hardy and the third for Shabaz, who was also named on Jan. 25 and Feb. 8.
