GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia sophomore Drew Courtney was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after leading the second-ranked Cavaliers to their third consecutive ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
Courtney, a native of Clifton, Va., won in singles in all four matches at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. Courtney’s run included two straight set wins against top-60 opponents, keying Virginia wins over No 19 Alabama, No. 7 Georgia, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 4 Tennessee. Courtney also won the clinching match in the 4-1 win over Tennessee in the finals, marking the second consecutive year he had won the championship-clinching match in the ITA Indoors. Courtney also went 2-1 at No. 1 doubles with Michael Shabaz, including a win over Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg of Georgia, who were 2009 ITA doubles quarterfinalists
Meanwhile, Virginia’s Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) received the ITA Sportsmanship Award at the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship Singh, a junior from Chandigarh, India, was chosen for this annual award by the 16 participating coaches for displaying outstanding sportsmanship and exemplifying the spirit of college tennis during the course of the Team Indoor Championship, as well as throughout his career. Singh became the first Virginia player to win this award in the 19 years it has been presented.
