GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech junior Luka Somen has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet after defeating two ranked opponents at No. 1 singles and playing a part in two conference doubles wins, including an upset of the nation's 10th-ranked team.
Somen accounted for the Hokies lone point in last Friday's match vs. top-ranked Virginia, defeating then 27th-ranked (and now 15th-) ranked Michael Shabaz by a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 score on the No. 1 court. Somen and partner Corrodo Degl' Incerti Tocci also teamed up for an 8-2 win over the 10th-ranked Virginia team of Alex Domijan and Jarmere Jenkins.
Somen, a native of Karlovac, Croatia, followed up with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over Maryland's No. 36 Maros Horny. Somen was again the winning half of a doubles team vs. the Terps as he and Tocci combined for a 9-8 (3) victory over John Collins and Jan Surovic.
Somen, now 39th in the latest ITA singles rankings released on Tuesday, has won his last four matches at No. 1 singles and is 7-1 in dual matches thus far in the spring season.
