Duke's Cunha Named ACC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke freshman Henrique Cunha has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after a perfect week that included wins over two nationally-ranked opponents.

The 17th-ranked Cunha won all five of his matches at the No. 1 position, posting a 3-0 doubles record and 2-0 singles mark. His wins helped Duke to a 2-1 record, including 7-0 wins over No. 34 Notre Dame and N.C. Central. Each of his two singles wins came against ranked opponents as he is now 7-3 overall this season against ranked foes.

Cunha, a native of Jau, Brazil, earned a win by retirement against No. 18 Casey Watt of Notre Dame after winning the first set by a 7-5 score and taking a 1-0 lead in the second. He also defeated No. 12 Illinois’ top-ranked player, No. 43 Dennis Nevolo, in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (2). In doubles, Cunha teamed with Reid Carleton for three straight wins as the two players improved to 22-4 as a team this year.
