GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia junior Jarmere Jenkins and Duke junior Henrique Cunha have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Players of the Week after their standout performances in last weekend’s battles of ranked teams and players.
Jenkins led the second-ranked Cavaliers to three dominating victories over No. 15 Texas, No. 5 Florida and No. 11 Texas A&M with straight set wins at No. 1 singles in each match and a sweep of No. 1 doubles. Cunha scored an upset win over No. 2 Dennis Nevolo of Illinois in leading the 10th-ranked Blue Devils to wins over the No. 19 Illini and No. 30 Notre Dame.
Virginia’s Jenkins, ranked 11th nationally, opened his weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 sweep of Soren Hess-Olesen to lead a 7-0 shutout of Texas. The College Park, Ga., native then defeated Nassam Slilam of Florida, 6-2, 6-4, to key a 6-1 win over the Gators. He completed his singles run with perhaps his most impressive win of the weekend, a 6-4, 6-4 decision over No. 19 Alexis Klegou of Texas A&M as the Cavaliers scored a 6-1 team victory over the Aggies.
Jenkins also went 3-0 in doubles play with Drew Courtney, including an 8-3 win over Florida’s fourth-ranked team of Slilam and Billy Federhofer.
The seventh-ranked Cunha upset Nevolo 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) in a thrilling No. 1 singles matchup of two top-10 players. Cunha’s victory helped seal a 7-0 Duke sweep of the Fighting Illini for the program’s first win over Illinois since the 2002 season. Cunha, of Jau, Brazil, handed Nevolo only his third loss since August (the other two were to top-ranked Mitchell Frank of Virginia).
In doubles, Cunha and sophomore Fred Saba clinched the point for Duke with an 8-6 victory from the No. 1 position. Against No. 30 Notre Dame, Cunha made quick work of the Irish’s Casey Watt in a 6-1, 6-2 win at the top spot in the lineup, moving to 5-0 in spring singles action. He and Saba improved to 3-0 at No. 1 doubles with an 8-5 defeat of Watt and Niall Fitzgerald. The ACC Player of the Week honor is Cunha’s third of the season and the 12th of his career.
