GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke junior Henrique Cunha has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the ninth time in his career after a perfect week at No. 1 singles and doubles.
The seventh-ranked Cunha, a native of Jau, Brazil, posted a win over two fellow Top 30 opponents in singles play and teamed with Fred Saba to defeat the nation’s 22nd-ranked team in doubles.
On the final day of the Duke Invitational on Monday, Jan. 16, Cunha defeated No. 30 Jose Hernandez of North Carolina 6-2, 6-4 to finish tied for second overall in the tournament singles standings, despite being out of the singles lineup in the first day of action. He also paired with Saba to take the doubles crown at the Duke Invitational with a 9-7 win over UNC’s Brennan Boyajian and Oystein Steiro in the title match.
In Saturday’s dual match opener at 32nd-ranked Michigan, Cunha and Saba upended No. 22 Evan King and Shaun Bernstein, 8-4, in the No. 1 doubles match. Cunha also posted a victory for Duke at No. 1 singles, rallying to defeat No. 6 King by a 7-5, 6-1 score and clinch a hard-fought 4-3 team win for the 10th-ranked Blue Devils after falling behind 5-1 in the first set.
