Four ACC Men's Teams Among ITA Preseason Top 20

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Led by No. 2 Virginia and No. 10 Duke, the Atlantic Coast Conference placed 11 men’s tennis teams among the top 66 of the 2012 ITA spring preseason rankings.

In addition to the five-time defending champion Cavaliers and Blue Devils, No. 15 Georgia Tech and No. 20 North Carolina also earned spots among the top 20. Miami checked in at No. 31, Virginia Tech at No. 34, Maryland at No. 38, Wake Forest at No. 41, Florida State at No. 44, NC State at No. 59 and Clemson at No. 66 in the 75-team rankings.

Fifteen ACC student-athletes are included among the 125-player singles rankings, led by Virginia freshman Mitchell Frank at No. 1 and Duke junior Henrique Cunha at No. 7. Georgia Tech’s Kevin King is listed at No. 9, Virginia’s Jarmere Jenkins at No. 11, Duke’s Chris Mengel at No. 17 and North Carolina’s Jose Hernandez at No. 30.

Georgia Tech’s King and Juan Spir lead 10 ACC teams among the ITA preseason doubles rankings at No. 2. Virginia’s Philippe Oudshoorn and Justin Shane are at No. 13, while Duke’s Cunha and Mengel are ranked 26th.

The men’s spring tennis season opens for many teams the weekend of Jan. 13-15, with the ITA National Team Indoor Kickoff Weekend set for Jan. 27-29.
