Athens, Ga. – The No. 20 University of Miami men’s tennis team bounced back from its first loss of the season to sweep Northwestern, 4-0, to close its competition at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the University of Georgia’s Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility on Monday.
The Hurricanes (2-1) got off to a strong start, claming the doubles point courtesy of wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles. Christian Blöcker and David Simon cruised past Northwestern’s Andrew McCarthy and Tobias Reitz in the top flight, 8-2, to improve to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in dual match play, while Keith Crowley and Hector Nieto picked up their first win in their doubles debut at No. 2, defeating Joshua Graves and Alex Sanborn, 8-6.
Miami kept its momentum going when the focus turned to singles competition, winning three matches in straight sets over the Wildcats (4-2) to claim the match 4-0. Crowley gave UM the 2-0 lead in his first match at No. 3 this season, downing Sanborn, 6-2, 6-2.
No. 28 UNC fell to ITA Kickoff regional host Georgia 4-2 Monday afternoon. The loss to the seventh-ranked Bulldogs is the Tar Heels' first of the season.
Clay Donato and Stefan Hardy began doubles play with an 8-6 victory that improved their record to 4-0 at the No. 1 spot this season. Georgia fought back to win the second and third flights, which clinched the team point.
Drake Bernstein extended the Bulldogs lead to two with the first win in singles play, but Donato made the team score 2-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Nate Schnugg. After Jamie Hunt followed with a three-set victory to give Georgia a two-point lead once again, Jose Hernandez answered with a 6-4, 7-6 upset of No. 45 Javier Garrapiz. Bo Seal closed the match for Georgia with a 7-5, 6-3 win at the fifth singles flight.
