GREENSBORO, N.C. - Boston College senior forward Charlie Rugg and Wake Forest junior forward Luca Gimenez have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Co-Players of the Week , announced by conference officials on Tuesday.
Rugg registered eight points on three goals and two assists in a 2-0-0 week for the Eagles. The senior from Roslindale, Mass., accounted for 50 percent of Boston College’s total goals scored, including two game winners, and played a part in two others. Rugg scored the game winner in the 37th minute after breaking the scoreless tie in the 11th minute in a 4-2 win over Rhode Island. He followed that performance up with the game-winning strike in the 66th minute in a 2-1 decision against NC State for the Eagles’ first conference win of the season.
Gimenez also helped Wake Forest to a 2-0-0 week and recorded his first career hat trick with three goals in a 4-0 win over Virginia Tech on Sept. 28, which gave the Demon Deacons their first ACC win of the season. He scored his first goal in the eighth minute, picked up his second goal in the 41st minute before he converted a penalty kick in the 56th minute for his final score of the game.
Gimenez’s hat trick is the 26th in Wake Forest history. He is the first ACC student-athlete to record a hat trick in league action this season. Will Bates (Virginia) and David Clemens (Virginia Tech) each accomplished the feat in non-conference play.
Following a full slate of non-conference games on Tuesday, league action continues on Friday, Oct. 5 with six teams in action. Friday’s lineup includes Duke at NC State on Regional Sports Networks, Maryland hosting Virginia on Fox Soccer Channel and North Carolina at Clemson on ESPN3.
