Five from ACC named to Soccer America Preseason Men's All-America Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Five Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes are part of the 2011 Soccer America Preseason Men’s All-America team announced by the publication on Tuesday morning.

Duke junior goalkeeper James Belshaw and junior defender Andrew Wenger were named to the squad, along with North Carolina senior defender Matt Hedges and junior midfielder Enzo Martinez, and Maryland senior forward Casey Townsend.

Wenger is the reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Year and was recently named to the 2011 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch list, along with Belshaw, Martnez and Townsend. Wenger and Martinez earned All-America honors in 2010. Hedges earned Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year and All-America honors at Butler before transferring to UNC. Wenger and Townsend were first-team All-ACC selections a year ago, while Belshaw and Martinez earned second-team honors.

Three players from No. 1 Louisville were named to the 2011 Soccer America's Preseason All-America team. Defending national champion Akron, Connecticut, Creighton, Duke, North Carolina and Notre Dame have two players each on the team.

The ACC men’s soccer season gets under way this weekend (Aug. 26-28) with all nine teams seeing action.
