North Carolina's Scott Goodwin Named ACC Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. ( – North Carolina senior goalkeeper Scott Goodwin has been named the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team, as announced Friday by Commissioner John Swofford.

The 2012 Capital One Academic All-America of the Year in Division I men’s soccer, Goodwin is a two-time Academic All-America selection, earning first-team honors in 2012 and second team honors in 2011.

Goodwin posted one of the top goalkeeping seasons in NCAA history in 2012 as the senior registered 17 shutouts and finished with an ACC-record 0.29 goals against average, while helping the Tar Heels to a share of the league’s regular season title. He is also a two-time All-ACC honoree, earning first team honors in 2011 and second team honors in 2012. This is his third All-ACC Academic Team nod for the biology major with a 3.957 cumulative grade point average.

All nine league schools that compete in men’s soccer are represented on this year’s team, led by Clemson, Duke, North Carolina and Virginia each with four selections.

The All-ACC Academic Team, which includes six student-athletes that were named first-or second-team All-ACC and six that earned All-ACC Freshman Team honors. Three were named to a  NSCAA Scholar Athlete All-Region team.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
