CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina men’s soccer team will honor former teammate Kirk Urso on Sunday, Feb. 24 and play the Columbus Crew, the Major League Soccer team Urso was playing for when he died from a genetic heart condition in August.
The game will be held at 1 p.m. in Greensboro, N.C., at UNC Greensboro Soccer Stadium. Proceeds from the spring game will benefit the Kirk Urso Memorial Fund, which supports youth heart health research. Tickets for the match are $10.
Urso, the captain of UNC's 2011 National Champion UNC Men's Soccer team passed away unexpectedly this past August, at the age of 22, from a congenital heart defect. Although he was an accomplished soccer player leading North Carolina to four consecutive College Cup appearances and fulfilled his dream of playing Major League Soccer at the Columbus Crew, Urso was more than an athlete, he was a friend, teammate, and invaluable member of the soccer and ACC community.
To honor his life and his legacy, the Tar Heels are asking, "Will You #Give3 for Kirk Urso?" The Columbus Crew has established the Kirk Urso Memorial Fund to benefit congenital heart defect research. The $3 represents the jersey number (3) he wore during his career at North Carolina.
Tickets and online donations can be made at TheCrew.com/UrsoFund. In addition to #Give3, you can help by "joining" the Facebook event and inviting your friends and family to spread the word: https://www.facebook.com/events/142217092606730/
