GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia attacker Chris Bocklet and goalkeeper Rob Fortunato have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet, respectively, for the period ending on Monday, Feb. 21.
Bocklet scored a game-high four goals and totaled five points against No. 16 Drexel’s All-American goalie Mark Manos. The junior from South Salem, N.Y., scored four goals on five shots on goal, including picking up a ground ball and flipping past Manos with one hand, while falling to the ground. His third goal of the game in the third quarter broke a 5-5 tie, while Bocklet put the game out of reach with his fourth score, the 12th and final for top-ranked Virginia. His lone assist to teammate Matt White broke an 8-all tie in the fourth stanza. In addition, Bocklet picked up six ground balls, the second-most by any one player in the game.
Making his first collegiate start, Fortunato saved a career-high 12 shots and proved invaluable in the second half, making 10 saves, while the game went back–and-forth between a UVa one-goal advantage and a tied game. The junior from Essex Fells, N.J., made consecutive point blank saves in the third quarter that kept the game even and later set up a fast-break clear that later led to a Shamel Bratton scored with 2:49 left in the quarter.
The Cavaliers conclude a two-game homestand today (Tuesday, Feb. 22) when Mount St. Mary's visits Klöckner Stadium. The game is slated for 4 p.m.
