GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State redshirt-junior linebacker Audie Cole and Wake Forest freshman quarterback Tanner Price headline a list of six players recognized as the Atlantic Coast Conference football players of the week, announced Monday by the ACC. Cole accounted for a game-high 12 tackles, one sack and the first interception of his career as the Wolfpack topped Central Florida 28-21. Price, the first true freshman quarterback to play for the Deacons in 10 years, racked up 246 yards of total offense, throwing for three scores and rushing for one as Wake Forest defeated Duke 54-48 in the first league game of the season.
Joining Price as an honoree is teammate Marshall Williams, the offensive back selection. Three more schools earned selections, including Virginia's Joe Torchia as the offensive lineman and Boston College's Luke Kuechly as the defensive lineman. Miami's Travis Benjamin was tabbed specialist of the week.
OFFENSIVE BACK - Marshall Williams, Wake Forest, WR, r-Sr., 6-1, 190, Durham, N.C. (Riverside) Williams accounted for three touchdowns in Wake Forest's 54-48 win over Duke on Sept. 11. Williams, a Durham, N.C., native, caught two passes, both for touchdowns, and totaled 51 yards receiving. His scoring catches were for 13 yards and 38 yards, both from Tanner Price. In addition, Williams tossed an 81-yard touchdown pass off a reverse to Chris Givens. Williams is 4-for-4 passing in his career for 131 yards and one touchdown.
DEFENSIVE LINEMAN - Luke Kuechly, Boston College, MLB, So., 6-3, 235, Cincinnati, Ohio (Saint Xavier) Kuechly, the 2009 ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year, notched 10 tackles (8 solos and 2 assists) and 3.5 TFLs (8 yards) as the Eagles held the Golden Flashes to four rushing yards and 205 total net yards. Kuechly registered double-figure tackles for the 11th consecutive game dating back to last season, a streak that leads the FBS.
DEFENSIVE BACK - Audie Cole, NC State, LB, r-Jr., 6-5, 239, Monroe, Mich. (Monroe) Cole was front and center in the aggressive defensive schemes that NC State unveiled in its victory over Central Florida. With the Wolfpack blitzing early and often, Cole made plays all over the field. He led both teams with 12 tackles, twice as many as anyone on either squad, and made tackles on both sides of the line of scrimmage. He had a sack for a 10-yard loss, and was credited with 3.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage for combined losses of 19 yards. He also made his tackles on the Wolfpack's side of the line count. Three times, twice in the first quarter, Cole made stops on third down to force the Knights to punt. He also intercepted a pass from wide receiver Nico Flores on a reverse play in the third quarter, his first career interception, to stop another UCF drive at midfield as the Knights were attempting to rally.
SPECIALIST - Travis Benjamin, Miami, WR, Jr., 5-10, 176, Belle Glade, Fla. (Glades Central) Benjamin led the Hurricanes against No. 2 Ohio State with 130 all-purpose yards. He returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown, as he and Lamar Miller are believed to be the first duo in Miami history to return a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns in the same game. Benjamin's punt return of 79 yards tied for the 10th longest in school history. It also was his first career punt return for a touchdown and the first for Miami since Thearon Collier's 60-yard punt return last season against Virginia. Benjamin added three catches for 51 yards.
ROOKIE - Tanner Price, Wake Forest, QB, Fr., 6-2, 190, Austin, Texas (Westlake) Price quarterbacked Wake Forest throughout the second half and helped the Deacons to a 54-48 win over Duke. Price completed 12 of 19 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns while also carrying 10 times for 56 yards. He compiled 246 yards of total offense and accounted for four touchdowns, 3 passing and 1 rushing. Price is the first true freshman quarterback to play for Wake Forest since 2000. In the second half, Price led the Deacons on scoring drives of 38, 73 and 79 yards.
