GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's John Henson has been selected as the ACC Player of the Week, while Duke's Austin Rivers has been tabbed as the ACC Rookie of the Week following their outstanding performances this past week.
Henson averaged 16.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 5.5 blocks as North Carolina opened the 2011-12 regular season with a pair of ACC wins. The Tampa, Fla., junior opened the week with a 12-point, seven-rebound and nine blocked-shot effort in a 67-55 win over Michigan State. He followed that with 20 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots as the top-ranked Tar Heels beat UNC-Asheville 91-75 Sunday.
Rivers averaged 15.5 points, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals in victories wins over Belmont and Presbyterian. In the season opener against Belmont, the Winter Park, Fla., freshman had 16 points, two assists and two steals in a team-high 38 minutes. The following afternoon, Rivers had 15 points to go along with six assists, no turnovers and three steals in a 96-55 win over Presbyterian.
