GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - Florida State senior outfielder James Ramsey and NC State freshman pitcher Carlos Rodon lead the 2012 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.
Ramsey, who led the Seminoles to the Atlantic Division title and the No. 1 seed in this week's ACC Championship at Greensboro's NewBridge Bank Park, was selected as the conference Player of the Year in a vote of the league's 12 head coaches.
Rodon, who posted a 9-0 record on the mound to help the Wolfpack to the No. 3 overall seed in the ACC Championship, was voted both ACC Pitcher and ACC Freshman of the Year.
Coach of the Year honors went to Florida State's Mike Martin for the seventh time. Martin became the third coach in NCAA Division I history to post at least 1,700 career wins while guiding the Seminoles to the Atlantic Division title, a 43-12 overall record and a No. 1 national ranking for several weeks late in the regular season. Florida State became just the third team in ACC history to post 24 league wins in a season.
Ramsey, a native of Alpharetta, Ga., enters the ACC Championship as the league's second-leading hitter with a .380 average, fifth in home runs with 11and 10th in RBI with 45. The Golden Spikes Award candidate and Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist has also excelled in the classroom as a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and a CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District IV selection.
Rodon, who hails from Holly Springs, N.C., boasts an ACC-low 1.59 ERA in addition to his perfect record on the mound. The 6-foot-3, 234-pound left-hander ranks second among league pitchers with 114 strikeouts in 96 innings and leads the ACC in complete games with two. The only freshman listed among the 2012 Dick Howser Trophy semifinalists, Rodon tied an NC State record for first-year players with his nine regular-season wins.
In addition to Ramsey and Rodon, the 2012 All-ACC first and second teams feature the ACC's leading hitter (Florida State's Jayce Boyd at .399), home run leader (Wake Forest's Mac Williamson with 17), the leader in RBI (Georgia Tech's Jake Davies with 58) and the leader in stolen bases (NC State's Trea Turner with 54).
Among pitchers, the team includes strikeout leader Marcus Stroman of Duke (136 in 98 innings), the leader in wins (Florida State's Mike Compton with 10) and the leader in saves (North Carolina's Michael Morin with 17.
All 12 conference squads are represented on the 2012 All-ACC Baseball Team, and seven student-athletes are repeat selections.
