GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State junior shortstop Justin Gonzalez has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, while North Carolina sophomore left-hander Hobbs Johnson earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
Gonzalez led top-ranked Florida State to a 3-0 record on the week, including two wins against Maryland to help the Seminoles secure their eighth ACC series victory of the season and run their winning streak to a season-high 10 games. The Miami, Fla., native recorded a single and scored a run in a 3-0 midweek win over Jacksonville while playing exceptional defense with six assists, including a key play in the ninth inning with a runner on base. In the two wins over Maryland, Gonzalez paced the Seminole offense hitting .600 (3-for-5) with two home runs – a two-run, opposite field shot as the Terps claimed a 10-3 win in game one, and his second grand slam of the season to key a 9-2 victory in game two. Gonzalez had a perfect day at the plate in Sunday’s game two, reaching base on all four plate appearances. For the week, the Miami, Fla., native slugged 1.111, while posting an on-base percentage of .545 with seven RBI.
North Carolina’s Johnson surrendered just one run and four hits while striking out 13 batters in 9.1 innings as the Tar Heels posted a 2-0 win over Winthrop in midweek and a 4-1 victory over Boston College in Sunday’s ACC series finale. The Rocky Mount, N.C., native struck out a then career-high six batters and allowed just two hits while working four shutouts innings in the win over Winthrop, then set a new career high with seven Ks while allowing two hits in 5.1 innings in Sunday’s win over the Eagles. Hobbs’ win vs. Boston College gave the Tar Heels a series sweep and solidified their hold on first place in the ACC’s Coastal Division. For the year, Johnson is 4-1 with a 1.60 ERA in 39.1 innings of work.
