GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State catcher Stephen McGee has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Maryland’s Jimmy Reed earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the second week in a row.
McGee had a big week for No. 8 Florida State as he had two game-winning hits in leading the Seminoles to a three-game sweep of No. 30 UCF. The Port St. Lucie, Fla., junior provided the game-winning hit in game one on Friday, breaking a 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to key a two-run inning and a 4-2 victory. He capped off the weekend recording his first career walk-off hit as he drilled an RBI single to straight away center with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to break a 4-4 tie. McGee began the series finale on Sunday with a ground rule double in the bottom of the first and scored a batter. McGee also keyed a four-run fifth inning in game two connecting on a one-out double as he was the first of seven straight batters to reach in the inning. In addition to hitting .444 for the series, McGee caught all 27 innings this weekend and converted on all 34 fielding opportunities. He was also a perfect 2-for-2 in throwing out would be base stealers.
Maryland’s Reed worked eight innings through rainy conditions Saturday afternoon to key the Terrapins to a 7-2 win over the 14th-ranked Tigers in the teams’ ACC series opener. Reed limited Clemson to four hits through eight innings while striking out 11 batters. The Gaithersburg, Md., native’s strikeout total was the highest for a Maryland pitcher this season. In his last four starts, Reed has an ERA of 1.41 and has pitched at least eight innings in three of those four starts.
