.667 - Batting average compiled last week by ACC Player of the Week Brad Miller of Clemson, who collected 14 hits in 21 at-bats. Miller also handled 28 chances in the field at shortstop without committing an error.
2 - Jake Stinnett became the first Maryland player in almost two years to hit multiple home runs when he went deep twice against West Virginia on April 5.
4 - Four ACC teams remain ranked among the top 10 of at least one major poll - No. 1 Virginia, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 8 Florida State and No. 9 Georgia Tech.
9 - Though trailing in each of its last 11 games, fifth-ranked North Carolina rallied to win nine of those contests.
9 - Shutouts thrown by Virginia’s pitching staff this season, including Will Roberts’ perfect game vs. George Washington on March 29.
11 -Wake Forest’s Mac Williamson and Virginia’s David Coleman have hit safely in 11 consecutive games, the longest active streaks in the ACC at present.
12 - Strikeouts in eight-plus innings by ACC Pitcher of the Week Danny Hultzen of Virginia during last Friday night’s winning start vs. eighth-ranked Georgia Tech. Hultzen allowed one earned run and did not walk a batter.
1,164 - With four victories last week, Clemson coach Jack Leggett has 1,164 career victories and holds the No. 16 spot on the NCAA Division I all-time wins list. Among those Leggett passed was his Clemson predecessor, the late Bill Wilhelm, who recorded 1,161 career wins.
1,301 - Miami head coach Jim Morris passed the 1,300 career win plateau with the Hurricanes’ three-game weekend sweep of NC State, including 251 ACC victories.
A tight race in the Coastal Division sees the top four teams separated by no more than a game and a half following the fifth weekend of ACC action ... Florida State continues to lead the Atlantic Division ... Clemson junior shortstop Brad Miller is named the ACC Player of the Week ... Virginia junior Danny Hultzen is named the ACC Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season ... Miller is also named a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week after batting .667 in five games ... Hultzen struck out 12 in eight-plus innings and was one of several ACC pitchers to put up big strikeout numbers over the weekend ... Virginia Tech junior Marc Zecchino also struck out 12 in seven innings of Sunday’s win at Wake Forest, setting a new career high ... NC State’s Cory Mazzoni set his ACC career high with 11 strikeouts in 7.2 innings of Friday night’s series opener at Miami ... Hurricanes sophomore E.J. Encinosa struck out a career-high 11 in seven innings of Game 3 in the NC State series.
Eagles outfielder Matt McGovern went 10-for-15 (.667) with a triple, six RBIs and three runs scored as BC won two of three at Duke over the weekend ... McGovern slugged at an .800 clip and had an on-base percentage of .688 while recording two game-tying hits and a game-winner ... McGovern’s big weekend included 4-for-5 showings in BC’s wins on Saturday and Sunday ... BC was 3-0 in the games in the games in which reliever Kyle Prohovich pitched last week .... Prohovich hasn’t allowed a run in his last five outings, a total of 8.2 innings ... he worked a career-high 3.2 innings and struck out five batters in Sunday’s extra-inning win at Duke.
ACC Player of the Week Brad Miller went 14-for-21 (.667) with two doubles, two triples, seven RBIs, eight runs, a .952 slugging percentage, .696 on-base percentage, two walks, and four steals in four attempts in five games .... Miller also did not commit an error in 28 chances at shortstop, which included several highlight-reel plays ... Miller raised his batting average to an ACC-best .423 batting as the Tigers won four of five on the week ... Miller also leads the ACC in on-base percentage (.545) ... in 10 innings pitched last week, reliever David Haselden allowed just three hits (all singles), no runs, and two walks (one intentional).
Sophomore Marcus Stroman in each of his first two pitching appearances last week and then threw seven innings of one-run baseball on Sunday against Boston College. ... the right-hander struck out a season-high nine batters against Boston College and walked just one ... Stroman notched 14 strikeouts for the week and allowed only two walks and eight hits ... he struck out the side three times during the week, including a four-strikeout inning against Wofford and two three-strikeout frames against Boston College ... freshman Chris Marconcini had multiple hits and an RBI in every game he played this week ... he had extra-base hits in three of those four outings and swiped three bases.
Senior catcher Rafael Lopez turned in one of the finest all-around weeks of his career, highlighted by his performance against nationally-ranked North Carolina ... Lopez responded by hitting .636 (7-for-11) in the three game series and boasted an on-base percentage of .714 (10-for-14) ... for the week, Lopez batted .615 with a .737 on-base percentage ... Lopez is now hitting .314 for the season ... the Tar Heels came into FSU series successful on 53 of 63 (.841) stolen base attempts, but were 0-for-4 with Lopez behind the plate ... Lopez, a Johnny Bench Award candidate, threw out three UNC baserunners on Sunday; one shy of his career high.
Junior Jake Davies was 4-for-4 with three RBI in Sunday’s series finale win over top-ranked Virginia ... sophomore Buck Farmer was the pitcher of decision vs. the Cavaliers, giving him six straight wins ... Brandon Thomas’ home run in Sunday’s game was the first of his career ... the ninth-ranked Yellow Jackets step out of conference action on Tuesday to play host to rival Georgia .... the Bulldogs have inched into the national polls as well (No. 28 this week by Collegiate Baseball) since the Yellow Jackets’ 15-6 win in the first meeting between the teams at Athens, Ga., on March 22 ... a third series game in set April 26 at Atlanta’s Turner Field.
Jake Stinnett homered twice in last week’s win over West Virginia and became the first Terrapin to go deep twice in a game since Tyler Bennett had three round-trippers against Wake Forest on May 9, 2009 ... Maryland’s pitching staff has posted three shutouts this year - the same amount as in the 2008, 2009 and 2010 seasons combined ... the Terps had at least 10 hits in each three games (April 2 vs. Florida State, April 3 vs. Florida State and April 5 vs. the Mountaineers) ... Maryland’s last previous three-game run of 10 straight hits came in March of 2010, when the Terps had 12 against Hofstra, 10 against Hofstra and 14 against Virginia Tech.
Miami have swept four of the five ACC series in which they have played this season ... sophomore E.J. Encinosa struck out a career-high 11 batters while working seven innings in Sunday’s win over NC State ... Encinosa left after throwing 99 pitches - 67 of which were for strikes ... NC State only had five balls leave the infield against Encinosa - four fly-outs and a double ... with a time of four hours and five minutes from start to finish, Saturday’s 14-13 extra-inning win over NC State was Miami’s longest of the season ... Saturday’s game was also the one in which head coach Jim Morris earned the 1,300th victory of his career.
North Carolina (29-5, 12-3) has won four straight ACC series for the first time since 2008 ... the fifth-ranked Tar Heels have trailed in each of their last 11 games but own a 9-2 record in those contests ... this past weekend’s series win over Florida State was the Tar Heels’ first in Tallahassee since 1995 ... freshman third baseman Colin Moran continues to lead the ACC with 47 RBI, 10 more than the next closet player ... freshman reliever Shane Taylor worked a career-long four innings in earning the win vs. sixth-ranked FSU on Saturday ... by winning 27 of their first 31 games, UNC matched the 1983 team for the fastest start in school history.
NC State pitcher Cory Mazzoni set a new career high for strikeouts in an ACC game with 11 in 7.2 innings vs. Miami last Friday night ... Mazzoni has recorded double digits in strikeouts in each of his last three appearances ... he is the first NC State pitcher to do so since at least 1998 ... Mike Rogers struck out 10 or more three times in a four-game span in 2004, and Vern Sterry did so four times in a six-game span in 2003, but neither fanned 10 or more in three consecutive appearances ... Pratt Maynard went 4-for-6 in the second game of the Miami series, helping the Wolfpack temporarily overcome an eight -run deficit before a tough 14-13 loss in extra innings.
ACC Pitcher of the Week Danny Hultzen has matched Jacob Thompson (2006-08) for the school career wins record with 27 .... Hultzen, 27-2 in his 2 1/2 collegiate seasons, also has 13 career games with 10 or more strikeouts (UVa is 13-0 in those games) ... Virginia’s all-time strikeouts leader, Hultzen now has 320 career strikeouts and has moved into a 15th-place tie with Miami’s Chris Hernandez (2008-10) and Florida State’s Jon McDonald (1998-2000) on the all-time ACC strikeouts list ... Virginia has captured all five of its ACC series this season, including three on the road ... Sunday’s loss at Georgia Tech ended a school-record 11-game road winning streak.
Virginia Tech junior pitcher Marc Zecchino finally got run support as the Hokies scored an 11-2 win at Wake Forest on Sunday ... Zecchino went seven innings and struck out a career-high 12 batters (one more than his prior outing of 11 versus Virginia last week) ... in his previous three ACC starts (22.1 innings), Zecchino had suffered hard-luck losses of 2-1 at Miami, 5-4 to North Carolina and 2-1 at Boston College ... Zecchino has increased his strikeout total in each of his last four starts -- seven (in 5.1 IP) against North Carolina, nine (6.0) at Boston College, and 11 (5.2) versus Virginia to move into a tie for second in strikeouts overall (65) and in ACC-only play (43).
Charlie Morgan’s walk-off, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday lifted Wake Forest to a win in the second game of its doubleheader against Virginia Tech ... the walk-off home run was the first of Morgan’s career ... the Demon Deacons will have two road games during the week ... the Wake Forest will travel to UNC Greensboro on Tuesday before heading to Winthrop on Wednesday ... Wake Forest resumes ACC play with a three-game weekend series against visiting ninth-ranked Georgia Tech beginning on Friday ... the Deacons will enter that series just 1.5 games out of second place in the Atlantic Division.
