The Eagles had to wait until Sunday, but finally played their first true home games of the season when they hosted a doubleheader against Miami ... the Eagles were slated to play host to Virginia Tech the weekend of March 25-27, but field conditions forced that series to be played at the University of Rhode Island ... snow and rain prevented the Eagles and Miami from playing scheduled games this past Friday and Saturday ... that meant BC waited 23 games and 44 calendar days into the 2011 season before playing its first true home games ... Matt Hamlet hit .545 in four games last week, raising his batting average for the season by 56 points.
After playing ACC series on the road each of the last two weekends, the Tigers’ schedule to date remains the toughest in the nation according to WarrenNolan.com ... senior Jeff Schaus has reached base at least once in each of the Tigers’ 26 games this season ... ACC Co-Player of the Week Richie Shaffer led the Tiger offense in four games last week by going 7-for-15 (.467) with a double, triple, homer, five RBIs, seven runs, three walks, and a steal ... Shaffer’s big blow was a grand slam that keyed an 11-5 win over visiting Georgia ... Schaus also went 7-for-15 with two RBIs, four runs, four walks, and a stolen base ... Chris Epps added a homer and five RBIs as well.
Duke freshman outfielder Anthony D’Alessandro is batting a team-high .458 against non-conference opponents while driving in 12 runs and scoring 11 ... D’Alessandro has reached base safely in 28 consecutive games ... Duke collected a combined 22 hits in last weekend’s in final two games of last weekend’s ACC series against Georgia Tech and made just two errors in three games vs. the Yellow Jackets ... Duke resumes play with a non-conference game vs. Wofford on Tuesday night .. Duke is 13-5 in non-league games this season and are a combined 111-38 in non-conference action in six seasons under head coach Sean McNally.
With the impending forecast of severe weather for late Monday night through Tuesday, FSU has postponed its Tuesday home game with North Georgia College to a later date ... the Seminoles have won 25 consecutive Sunday games following their 12-3 victory over Maryland in Game 3 of this past weekend’s ACC series ... prior to playing at Maryland, the Seminoles scored their second neutral site win of the season over rival Florida, downing the third-ranked Gators 5-2 before 10,078 fans in Jacksonville last Tuesday night ... FSU holds a 2-1 edge in a four-game series this season, with the fourth meeting slated for April 12 in Tallahassee.
Juniors Jacob Esch and Matt Skole had four hits apiece and drove in a combined five runs in Sunday’s win at Duke ... the Yellow Jackets (23-6, 11-1) have won 18 of their last 19 games and have won 10 straight series dating to May 9 of last year ... for the week, Esch had eight hits with five extra-base hits and four RBI on the week … junior Mark Pope tossed his third complete game of the season, allowing one earned run and just four hits (all singles) over nine innings against Duke on Friday … Pope had seven strikeouts, and won his conference-leading seventh game of the season … the seven wins also tie for the most in the nation.
With Saturday’s 5-0 shutout of No. 7 Florida State, Maryland ended a 40-game losing streak to the Seminoles ... the Terps’ last victory against Florida State had been March 26, 1998 in Tallahassee, Fla. ... it was Maryland’s first home win against the Seminoles since May 2, 1993 ... Maryland Saturday starter David Carroll struck out a season-best seven batters and tied his season highs with 7.1 while allowing just three hits ... Carroll improved to 5-1 on the season and dropped his ERA to 2.15 ... Carroll, who has allowed just one run in his last two starts, is tied for fifth in wins among ACC pitchers and ranks sixth in innings pitched with 46.
Miami pounded out 36 hits in Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of Boston College, including five home runs ... the Hurricanes are 5-0 this season in ACC road games ... ACC Co-Player of the Week Rony Rodriguez led the ’Canes at the plate in three games last week with a .750 average with six hits in eight official at-bats, while drawing two walks ... Rodriguez went 4-for-5, including his team-leading fourth home run of the year, in Sunday’s twin bill at BC ... Miami plays its next five games in the state of Florida, beginning with Wednesday night’s road trip to Florida Gulf Coast ... the Hurricanes have defeated the Eagles twice earlier this season.
A year after starting 4-8 in ACC play and after starting off league play this season with a 1-2 series loss at Wake Forest, the Tar Heels (26-4, 10-2) have rattled off nine consecutive league wins for the first time since 2006 ... UNC’s 26 overall wins in its first 30 games matches the fastest start in school history, and this marks the first time since 2005 the Tar Heels have won 10 of their first 12 league games ... freshman Colin Moran kept up his torrid RBI last week, driving in seven runs in four games ... Moran now has 42 RBIs on the season to lead the ACC ... Levi Michael hit .455 for the week, and had the go-ahead RBI in Saturday’s win over Clemson.
The Wolfpack has won seven of its last nine games heading into Tuesday night’s non-league contest against visiting East Carolina ... Matt Bergquist drove in a career-high six runs to lead a 17-hit attack as NC State defeated Wake Forest on Sunday and took two of three from the Demon Deacons on the weekend ... Bergquist is batting .429 (12-for-28) with six doubles and 11 RBIs in his last nine games ... Pratt Maynard extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a pair of singles on Sunday ... Maynard is hitting .350 (14-for-40) during his streak, which is currently the longest active one in the ACC ... the Pack visits Miami for a three-game series this weekend.
Junior Will Roberts was named the ACC Pitcher of the Week and a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week following his perfect game against George Washington on March 29 ... Roberts threw just the second perfect game in ACC history and only the eighth nine-inning perfect game in NCAA Division I play since 1957 ... the Cavaliers (28-2, 11-1) are off to their best start through 30 games in program history ... Virginia moved to No. 1 in a pair of national polls last week, marking the second straight season the program has claimed a No. 1 national ranking ... the Cavaliers remain No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball poll this week.
Andrew Rash hit his ACC-leading 10th home run of the season in Sunday’s game vs. top-ranked Virginia ... Rash also homered in Friday’s series opener vs. the visiting Cavaliers ... all eight of the Hokies’ runs in the three-game series were scored via home runs ... starting pitcher Marc Zecchino struck out a career-high tying 11 batters in the second game of the Virginia series on Saturday ... Virginia Tech now plays five consecutive games on the road, beginning with Tuesday night’s road trip to VMI ... the Hokies will play a three-game ACC series this weekend at Wake Forest before making the short drive to Radford on April 12.
Catcher Brett Armour turned in his first-career three-hit game on Sunday at NC State, going 3-for-4 ... Wake Forest’s 14 hits and three home runs in Friday night’s series-opening win over the Wolfpack were season highs ... Steven Brooks was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, four RBIs and a run scored, while Carlos Lopez was 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored ... the Demon Deacons will have two mid-week when they play a home-and-home series with High Point ... Wake Forest will host the Panthers on Tuesday night before traveling to HPU on Wednesday ... the Deacons will then host Virginia Tech in an ACC weekend series.
