ACC Players of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. ( – Georgia Tech junior catcher Zane Evans has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while North Carolina’s Benton Moss claimed Pitcher of the Week honors.

Evans drove in nine of the team’s 32 runs as No. 14 Georgia Tech outscored Boston College, 32-9, in a weekend sweep in Atlanta.  Evans finished the week hitting .467 (7-for-15) with five runs, a team-best nine RBI, two doubles, two home runs, and a triple.  He slugged a team-best 1.133, played error-free at catcher, and gunned down one of BC’s two steal attempts on the weekend. His two-run homer on Friday broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning and would stand as the game-winner.  On Saturday,  Evans smacked his second career triple in the first inning to give Tech a 1-0 lead, and then followed later with his ACC-leading eighth homer – a three-run shot – in the 11-3 rout.  On Sunday, his two-run single in the seventh inning helped blow open Tech’s 2-1 lead en route to the 9-1 win.  The Roswell, Ga. native has hit safely in 12-consecutive games and has reached base at least once in 18-straight games.  Over his 12-game hitting streak, Evans is hitting .510 (26-for-51), is slugging 1.039, has hit seven of his eight homers, and accounted for 23 RBIs.

The Tar Heels’ Moss earned his league-leading fifth victory of the year Saturday night as he carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning against No. 29 Miami. Moss matched a season high with nine strikeouts in the win as he surrendered just two hits over seven scoreless innings, leading top-ranked UNC to even up the conference series, which it would eventually win on Sunday. Moss has registered at least 7 strikeouts in each of his starts this season and ranks fourth in the ACC with 39 strikeouts this year. The Enfield, N.C., native is also holding opponents to a .174 batting average through his 31 innings of work, the fourth-lowest mark in the ACC heading into the third week of conference play.
