GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest sophomore first baseman Matt Conway as been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Florida State junior left-hander Sean Gilmartin received ACC Pitcher of the Week honors presented by Chevrolet.
Conway, a native of Birmingham, Mich., hit .500 in Wake Forest’s four games last week. Conway drove in eight runs and at least one extra base in every game, including three home runs and a pair of doubles. Conway had multi-RBIs in three of the four games, giving him six games on year with at least two RBIs. He is now tied for second place among ACC players in RBIs with 16, and is tied for sixth in total bases with 28.
Gilmartin turned in the finest performance of his Florida State career Friday at Georgia. Facing just two batters more than the minimum, Gilmartin struck out a career-high 11 – eclipsing his previous high by two. The Moorpark, Calif., native allowed just one hit – an opposite field single in the fifth – in eight innings of shutout work. The Bulldogs managed just one other baserunner on a hit batter, but never got a runner to second base as Gilmartin departed with a 6-0 lead. Gilmartin improved to 3-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.23. In 22 innings this season, he has struck out 24 batters and issued just two walks.
