GREENSBORO, N.C. – Boston College senior shortstop Anthony Melchionda has been named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week of the 2012, while Duke right-hander Robert Huber earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
Melchionda led the Eagles to a sweep of its three season-opening games against Virginia, James Madison and Coastal Carolina in the Caravelle Resort Tournament at Conway, S.C., while Huber delivered a solid starting performance as the Blue Devils defeated fifth-ranked Texas in the third game of their road series on Sunday.
Melchionda hit .429 in Boston College’s three wins, including three doubles and home run, while driving in six runs. He went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI in Friday’s 5-3 season-opening win over No. 17 Virginia, then followed up with 2-fof-5, two-RBI performance in an 8-5 win over James Madison. The Braintree, Mass., native closed out with another 2-for-5 performance in an 8-3 win over Coastal Carolina that included a home run and three RBI.
In addition to his prowess at the plate, Melchionda did not commit an error in 21 chances at short.
Duke’s Huber held No. 5 Texas to two hits in six shutout innings to lead the Blue Devils to a 5-2 win over the Longhorns on Sunday. Huber matched a career high with six strikeouts in the win.
Given a chance to pitch close to home, the Plano Texas, native looked good in the opening frame. After issuing a walk to the first batter he faced, Huber struck out the next three hitters swinging to end the inning. During the second through fifth innings, Huber retired 10 straight batters. During the second through sixth innings, Huber had a stretch where he retired 14 of 17 batters.
