Seven from ACC Named BA Preseason All-America

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Clemson junior infielder Richie Shaffer and Duke junior pitcher Marcus Stroman head up a list of seven Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes named to the 2012 Baseball America Preseason All-America Team announced by the publication on Monday.

Shaffer and Stroman earned first team honors. The second team includes North Carolina sophomore third baseman Colin Moran and Florida State senior outfielder James Ramsey. Georgia Tech junior outfielder Brandon Thomas, Miami senior catcher Peter O'Brien (named as a designated hitter) and Virginia junior pitcher Branden Kline were named to the third team.

Clemson's Shaffer, named the first team's designated hitter, led or tied for the Tigers' 2011 team lead in games (63), runs (62), homers (13), RBIs (55), total bases (128), slugging percentage (.577), and walks (44). The Charlotte, N.C., native also hit .315 with 15 doubles, two triples, and eight steals. Stroman, a native of Medford, N.Y, served as a starter and reliever for the Blue Devils in 2011, posting a 3-4 record and a team-best 2.80 ERA over eight starts and nine relief appearances. He ranked second in the nation last year with 12.60 strikeouts per nine innings, striking out a team-high 90 batters in 64.1 innings. Stroman, who also had a team-high four saves, held opponents to two or fewer runs in 15 of 17 appearances last season.

North Carolina's Moran earned ACC Freshman of the Year honors while batting .335 with nine homes and 71 RBI and keying the Tar Heels to a spot in the 2011 College World Series. Florida State's Ramsey batted .364 with 10 home runs and 67 RBI while stealing 11 bases.

Georgia Tech's Thomas hit .307 with 12 doubles, two triples, six home runs and 29 RBI in 60 starts (60 games) last season, and was 19-of-22 in stolen base attempts O'Brien transferred to Miami after three seasons at Bethune-Cookman, where as a junior he hit .304 with 14 home runs and 69 RBI. Working out of the bullpen last season, Virginia's Kline posted a 4-1 record and 1.88 ERA while saving 18 games as the Cavaliers claimed the ACC championship and earned their second College World Series berth in three years.
