GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State junior Kris Kornegay-Gober and Clemson junior Whitney Fountain have been named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Performers of the 2012-13 season following their efforts in last weekend’s season-opening meets.
Kornegay-Gober was named the ACC Men’s Performer of the week after he re-wrote the record books at the JDL Fast Track Kick-Off in Winston-Salem, N.C., by leaping 7’ 4.25” to win the high jump. The Washington, D.C., native broke the previous school record of 7’ 3.75” in the event, which he set at last year’s ACC Indoor Championships – a record that had been the second-longest standing record in the ACC Championship meet’s record book.
Fountain, the ACC Women’s Performer of the Week, established the nation’s best pentathlon total on opening weekend with 3,998 points – a personal best for the Bronx, N.Y., native – at the Orange and Purple Winter Classic hosted by Clemson. Fountain’s point total elevated her to No. 3 in Clemson’s record books for the pentathlon. Fountain established personal bests in two of the five events - the high jump (5’9.25”) and shot put (36’8.5”).
