2011 All-ACC Academic Men's Outdoor Track & Field Team Announced

June 28, 2011

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State senior Ciaran O’Lionaird has been recognized as the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, announced today by Commissioner John Swofford. O’Lionaird highlights the 2011 All-ACC Academic Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Team, which includes 14 All-ACC honorees.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

A 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Third Team selection, O’Lionaird claimed titles in both the 1500-meter and 5000-meter runs on the final day of competition at this year’s ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The senior sport management major from County Cork, Ireland, clocked a 3:40.69 in the 1500-meter run, besting the ACC Championship mark set in 2006 by more than a second and a half to clinch his first career conference title. His time was also a season best in the league. Later in the day he registered a time of 13:52.11 in the 5000-meter run, shattering the previous ACC Championship record by more than four and a half seconds, which was set in 1983, to collect his second league title. The Seminoles went on to win their seventh consecutive ACC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship. O’Lionaird qualified for both events at the NCAA Championship.

Joining O’Lionaird as both an All-ACC Academic and All-ACC selection were Miller Moss of Clemson, Tanner Anderson, John Austin, Michael Barbas, Curtis Beach, Josh Lund and Ryan McDermott of Duke, David Ambler and Charles Clark of Florida State, Parker Smith of North Carolina, Adam Henken of NC State and Matthias Treff and Alexander Ziegler of Virginia Tech. Additionally, Moss, Austin, Beach, McDermott, Smith, Treff and Ziegler joined Hunter Hall of Virginia Tech in receiving First or Second Team All-America accolades at this year’s NCAA Championship.

Also highlighting this year’s team are four four-time All-ACC Academic Team honorees, including Miller Moss of Clemson, John Austin and Ryan McDermott of Duke and Brian Chibudu of Florida State. Three more student-athletes garnered the third accolade of their career, including Michael Barbas of Duke, Andrew Jacobs of Florida State and Parker Smith of North Carolina. An additional eight collected their second honor.
