ACC to be Represented by 101 Student-Athletes at 2011 #NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

June 7, 2011

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Atlantic Coast Conference schools combined to send 101 student-athletes - 48 men and 53 women - to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The four-day event kicks off Wednesday at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

The conference will be represented in 39 of the 42 total events. With 104 combined entries, the ACC ranks fourth highest amongst the nation's conferences.

Television coverage will be provided by CBS Sports Network on Friday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET, while CBS will broadcast Saturday's action from 1 to 3 p.m. ET. Portions of the meet not televised will be available via webcast at NCAA.com and GoDrakeBulldogs.com. Live results will be provided at FlashResults.com.

Participants in each event qualified for the field of 24 by placing in the top 12 at the NCAA East Preliminary Round, which was held May 26-28 at Indiana University. The NCAA West Preliminary Round was hosted by the University of Oregon.

A total of 48 men, representing 10 league schools, will participate in the men's championship. Eight student-athletes will be competing in multiple events including four from Clemson and four from Florida State. The Tiger men will run in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, while the Seminoles will race in the 4x100. Florida State enters the 4x100 with the fastest seed time, having posted a 39.17 in the NCAA East Preliminary Round. Two student-athletes - Florida State's Ngoni Makusha and Virginia Tech's Marcel Lomnicky - look to successfully defend their national titles. Makusha is seeking his third consecutive outdoor long jump title and fourth overall after also taking top honors at the 2011 indoor meet. Lomnicky is aiming for his second straight outdoor hammer throw championship.

In addition, a total of 53 women, representing 10 league schools, will compete in the women's championship. Ten student-athletes will participate in multiple events, including four from North Carolina, and two each from Clemson, Florida State and Miami. Clemson's April Sinkler is the only student-athlete, male or female, to qualify for the NCAA Championship in three events, as she will compete in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Three ACC squads will run in the 4x100, including Clemson, Florida State and Virginia Tech, while North Carolina will race in the 4x400. Clemson's Patricia Mamona will seek to successfully defend her triple jump title from the 2011 outdoor meet, while Florida State's Kim Williams is coming off her third consecutive indoor championship in the event. Williams also took top honors in the triple jump at the 2009 outdoor championship and is looking for her fifth overall title in the event. Additionally, she claimed top honors in the long jump in 2009.

Florida State, the 2011 ACC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Champion, finished highest among conference teams at the 2010 national outdoor meet, tallying 22 points and tying for eighth place. Virginia Tech placed highest among the league's women's squads, collecting 33 points to finish fifth.
