GREENSBORO, N.C.--Atlantic Coast Conference men's and women's track & field teams declared 278 student-athletes for the 2010 NCAA East Regional Meet, held Thursday-Saturday, May 27-29 on the Irwin Bell Track at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C. The 278 student-athletes include 127 men and 151 women--both of which rank fifth nationally--and the latest medical scratches, according to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
For the first time, the NCAA will hold a regional round at two sites--North Carolina A&T (East) and the University of Texas in Austin (West)--with the top-48 declared athletes in each event competing for one of 12 spots that will advance to the 2010 NCAA Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Oregon from June 9-12.
The Florida State men led all league teams by declaring 21 student-athletes for the field, which is tied for the 13th highest total in the nation, and was followed by Virginia Tech with 19, and North Carolina and Virginia with 17 each. Clemson declared 16 student-athletes, while Duke had 11. Rounding out the order on the men's side was Georgia Tech (nine), NC State (seven), Wake Forest (five), Miami (three), and Boston College and Maryland with one apiece.
The Tiger women tied for third nationally by declaring 28 student-athletes and lead eight squads with at least 10 declarations. Florida State (18), Duke (17), North Carolina (16), Miami (13), Georgia Tech (13), Virginia Tech (12), and Virginia (10) also top the list. NC State and Wake Forest each feature seven student-athletes, while Boston College and Maryland complete the list with five each.
All 12 ACC teams on both the men's and women's sides will be represented at the east regional. Action begins at 10 a.m. on Thursday and Friday, and at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Live results will be available at http://www.ncaa.com/sports/c-otrack/champpage/c-otrack-div1-east-index.html.
