GREENSBORO, N.C.—NC State freshman Ryan Hill and Clemson sophomore April Sinkler each broke school records at weekend meets and were named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Performer of the Week, respectively, for the period ending May 2.
Hill, who was the 10,000-meter champion (29:32.28) at last month’s ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational, hosted by Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. on Saturday, and was the top collegiate finisher. Hill’s 13:44.36 time broke a Wolfpack record—the second time he has set a new school standard this season—and ranks first in the ACC and 13th nationally in 2010. The Hickory, N.C., native’s 3:40.81 performance in the 1,500-meter run at the North Carolina Joe Hilton Fast Times Meet three weeks ago also is a school record.
Sinkler, who was named the Most Valuable Field Performer at the conference championship after winning the long jump (21-0.75) and high jump (5-11.25), won both events on Saturday in a three-way meet against Georgia Tech and Kennesaw State in Atlanta, Ga. Sinkler not only set the school record in the high jump, but became the first Tiger from the women’s team to clear 6-0.00 in the event. In addition, the Stafford, Va., native’s 21-1.25 in the long jump was a personal best in outdoor events. Both marks lead the ACC this season and rank eighth and sixth in the nation, respectively.
The ACC will announce the Outdoor Track & Field Performers of the Week by 5 p.m. each Tuesday during the regular season. All ACC outdoor track & field information can be found at theACC.com.
