GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech sophomore Shawn Roberts registered the second fastest time in the nation in the 1500-meter run and has been recognized as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Performer of the Week presented by Chevrolet. His teammate, Leslie Njoku, took top honors in the 400-meter hurdles en route to receiving the league’s Women’s Performer of the Week award presented by Chevrolet.
Roberts paced the field of 13 in the 1500-meter run to take the top podium spot at the Georgia Intercollegiate Championship. His time of 3:47.62 was a personal best and currently ranks second in the nation. The Centerville, Ohio, native also participated in two relays. He ran the last leg of the 4x800, which posted a first-place time of 7:39.14. The clip was good for third fastest in the country. Roberts wrapped up the competition by helping the 4x400 meter relay to a third-place finish among eight teams with a 3:22.96 mark.
Njoku kicked off her outdoor season at the Georgia Intercollegiate Championship by becoming one of the first athletes in the country to finish under one minute in the 400-meter hurdles. The Jersey City, N.J., senior raced to a 58.39 clip to finish first among a field of 15. Her time is currently fourth-fastest in the nation. Njoku also ran the last leg on the Yellow Jackets’ 4x100 meter relay. The squad took the top podium spot with a time of 45.75, which currently ranks 19th in the country.
All 12 conference teams are in action this weekend. Georgia Tech will host the Yellow Jacket Invitational Friday and Saturday in Atlanta.
