DURHAM, N.C.- The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) announced Curtis Beach as the 2012 National Field Athlete of the Year for the indoor season. The junior was selected by coaches from across the nation.
The Albuquerque, N.M., native took the heptathlon crown at the NCAA indoor championships this past weekend in Nampa, Idaho with a school and conference record score of 6,183 points. This mark also places him third on the all-time collegiate performance list in the event.
During the competition, the junior set six personal records and shattered his own 1,000 meters world record by four seconds with a time of 2:23.63. This time also placed him in the collegiate top ten for this season's open 1,000 meters.
Earlier this season, Beach took first place in the heptathlon at the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference(ACC) Indoor Championships by earning a total of 5,862 points. His performance placed him over 500 points beyond the second place finisher.
