GREENSBORO, N.C. — Virginia sophomore Ryan Collins and Florida State junior Kim Williams were selected as this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Performers of the Week for the period ending February 14, announced today. Collins automatically qualified for the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship in the 5,000-meter run, while Williams automatically qualified in the triple jump.
Collins, competing at the Husky Classic hosted by the University of Washington (Feb. 12), placed fourth in a field of 81 in an ACC-leading time of 13:46.41. The Mansfield, Mass., native’s time shattered the previous Cavalier record held by Kris Herdt (14:02.00, 1989), allowing him to become Virginia’s first automatic qualifier this season.
Williams—the second Seminoles this season to earn weekly honors—won the triple jump with an automatic qualifying mark of 46 feet, 6.00 inches, breaking her own school record, at the Tyson Invitational. The Kingston, Jamaica, native was both an ACC and NCAA champion in the triple jump in 2008-09.
ACC Indoor Track and Field action continues this weekend with six of 12 teams in action. Just over one week remains on the schedule before the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship. The three-day meet will be hosted by Virginia Tech and run from February 25-25.
