GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech sophomore Andrew Kosic and North Carolina junior Stephanie Peacock have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Male and Female Swimmers of the Week, announced Tuesday by the conference office. Georgia Tech senior Brandon Makinson and Florida State senior Ariel Rittenhouse were recognized as the Male and Female Divers of the Week.
Kosic swept the sprint freestyle events against rival Georgia, winning the 50 free in 20.63 and pulling out a two-one hundredth win in the 100 free in 45.15. The West Chester, Pa., native also anchored the winning 200 medley relay in 1:31.17.
Rittenhouse started her 2012-13 campaign strong, winning three out of her four events on the weekend. On Friday against in-state rival Miami, the native of Santa Cruz, Calif., edged out Lindsay Lester on the 3-meter with a score of 335.25. At Saturday’s tri-meet against Florida International and Florida Atlantic, Rittenhouse won both the 1-meter and 3-meter. Her score on the 3-meter of 361.75 was four points shy of the school record, set in the 2010-11 season.
Peacock led North Carolina to a second place finish in the SMU Classic as the Tar Heels finished ahead of No. 9 Texas, No. 10 Florida, and No. 16 SMU. The Cape Coral, Fla., native posted the top time in the 500 freestyle with 4:38.39, more than five seconds faster than any other swimmer, and set a new a new meet and pool record by more than three seconds. Peacock anchored the 800 free relay with a split of 1:46.17 as the Tar Heels finished second to Southern Cal’s winning time of 7:10.45, going 7:10.98.
Makinson won both diving events and broke his own school record on the 3-meter board as the native of Alberta, Canada, won both springboard events in a dual meet against rival Georgia. His score of 422.55 beat his previous record of 408.85 that he set only one week prior.
