April 15, 2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) -- Virginia Tech senior Heather Savage has been named the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year and headlines the 2013 All-ACC Academic Women's Swimming & Diving Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

A health, nutrition, foods and exercise major, Savage has been recognized as the sport's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for two consecutive seasons. The Canandaigua, N.Y., native was named to the Dean's List in the fall and is set to graduate this semester. Savage compiled four All-ACC performances at the conference meet, winning the title in ACC record time in the 100 butterfly, placing third in the 200 butterfly, and swimming on the victorious 200 and 400 medley relay teams. At the NCAA Championship, she earned All-America honors in the 100 butterfly in eighth place.

Eight schools are represented on the All-ACC Academic Team, led by Florida State with eight student-athletes. Virginia and Virginia Tech have seven apiece, while Miami and North Carolina have six each. Four from NC State were honored, followed by Georgia Tech with three and Duke with two honorees.

Florida State's Julia Henkel and Kristine Polley, North Carolina's Katie Rechsteiner, NC State's Marifrances Henley, and Virginia's Emily Lloyd and Lauren Perdue were named to the league's academic team for the third time in their careers.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
