March 24, 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C.—The Atlantic Coast Conference will be represented by 27 student-athletes who earned invitation’s to this weekend’s NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship, held from Thursday-Saturday, March 25-27 at the McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion on the campus of host Ohio State University in Columbus. The ACC’s 27 performers are representing seven teams and combined to earn 77 invitations for competition in individual events.

The ACC’s representation combined for 57 All-ACC performances at the recently concluded 2010 ACC Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship, in which Virginia won its third straight and 13th title overall.

The Cavaliers, along with North Carolina, lead all league teams with eight individual invitations. Additionally, Virginia will be competing in a trio of relay events, the 400 and 800-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relays, while the Tar Heels qualified for the 400 and 800-yard freestyle relay.

Following Virginia and North Carolina are Florida State and Virginia Tech with five and three invitations, respectively. Duke, Georgia Tech, and Miami have one qualifier each.

At last weekend’s NCAA women’s championship, Virginia topped all league teams with a ninth-place finish, its third top-10 placing in school history and highest since coming in seventh in 1988. Four ACC squads finished among the top-25, with North Carolina coming in 20th, Virginia Tech in 24th, and Maryland in 25th. Duke slid into a tie for 20th place, and Florida State rounded out the order in a tie for 44th.

Overall, the ACC saw 27 of its 38 competitors earn All-America status in at least one event, while 15 were multi-time All-American performers, including Tar Heel freshman Carly Smith (three), and Virginia senior Mei Christensen (five) and freshman Lauren Perdue (six).

At last season’s NCAA men’s championship, the Cavaliers topped all ACC teams with a ninth-place finish, and were joined in the top-20 by Miami, Georgia Tech, and Florida State holding spots 18-20. North Carolina and Virginia Tech placed 26th and 36th, respectively.
