GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina freshman Dan O'Connor registered two NCAA `B' qualifying times and has been honored as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Performer of the Week presented by Chevrolet. Duke senior Ashley Twichell collected two first-place finishes en route to being recognized as the league's Women's Performer of the Week presented by Chevrolet.
O'Connor recorded four career-best times in a dual meet win over arch-rival Duke and in the College Cup Invitational in Durham, N.C., over the weekend. The Syracuse, N.Y., native broke the Duke pool record Sunday in both the 1000-yard and 1650-yard freestyle at 9:06.26 and 15:05.98, respectively. Those times are also good for third and fourth in UNC history in those events, while his cut in the 1650 is also a NCAA `B' qualifier. In the dual meet against Duke Friday, O'Connor won the 500 free in 4:23.62, another `B' cut and almost four seconds better than his previous career best.
Twichell claimed first in the 1000 freestyle in dual meet action against conference foe North Carolina Friday, registering both a season-best and NCAA `B' qualifying time of 9:52.76. The Fayetteville, N.Y., native finished the event in less than 10 minutes for the first time this season. In the 500 free, Twichell recorded another victory, finishing with a season-best time of 4:47.11, shaving three seconds off of her previous fastest time this year. The time also earned her a second `B' cut in the meet.
