Seventeen From ACC Set For NWSL Draft

Selections set to begin Friday at 10 a.m.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Seventeen student-athletes from Atlantic Coast Conference schools are among the 146 eligible for the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) College Draft, which is set for Friday (Jan. 15) at 10 a.m. at the Baltimore Convention Center.  

The conference’s contingent includes 2015 ACC Offensive Player of the Year Makenzy Doniak and Defensive Player of the Year Emily Sonnett of Virginia. They are joined by fellow first-team All-ACC selections Cheyna Williams of Florida State and Katie Bowen of North Carolina.

All-ACC second team selections Katie Naughton and Cari Roccaro of Notre Dame are also among the potential draftees, as are All-ACC third-team members Michaela Hahn and Carson Pickett of Florida State, Alexa Newfield of North Carolina, and Brittany Ratcliffe of Virginia.

Doniak led the ACC in points scored (39) and assists (11), and Sonnett led a Cavalier defense that posted 15 shutouts while yielding an average of 0.65 goals per game. FSU’s Williams (27 points), UNC’s Newfield (11 goals) and the Seminoles’ Pickett (9 assists) were also among the ACC leaders in their respective categories. UNC keeper Bryane Heaberlin, who is also among those eligible to be drafted on Friday, ranked second in the ACC in fewest goals allowed per game at 0.55.

North Carolina leads all ACC schools with five draft-eligible players. Three players each from ACC champion Florida State and Virginia have declared, along with two each from NC State and Notre Dame, and one from Boston College.

Florida State’s seven selections in the previous three NWSL drafts rank second among all schools, one behind UCLA’s eight. Six Virginia players have previously been selected, including two in the opening round. Four have been taken from North Carolina, including two first-round picks.
