GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State’s Chance Shepard and Pitt’s Nick Yarnall have been voted the ACC Baseball Co-Players of the Week, while Louisville’s Brendan McKay was selected as the Pitcher of the Week.
A senior designated hitter from Wilmington, North Carolina, Shepard homered in three consecutive games over the weekend against Horizon League favorite Wright State. On Friday, Shepard homered in the same game as his younger brother, Shane, marking the first time a pair of Wolfpack brothers have pulled the feat since Brian and Robbie Bark on March 27, 1990. In four games on the week, Shepard knocked in eight runs and had eight hits, including two doubles and three home runs, while scoring five times.
Yarnall led the Pitt offense to three big wins over Grambling State. The DH/1B went 8-of-14 with five home runs and eight runs batted in over the weekend. A junior from Landisville, Pennsylvania, Yarnall went yard twice in one inning in two contests, sending two balls over the fence in the fifth inning of game two and going deep twice in the seventh inning of game three. In that seventh inning, Yarnall led the offense to 15 runs off of 15 hits to secure the win.
McKay registered his first collegiate complete game to lead the No. 2 Cardinals to a 4-0 road win over No. 28 Ole Miss on Saturday afternoon. A sophomore lefthander from Darlington, Pennsylvania, McKay had eight strikeouts and allowed just three hits with no walks to improve to 2-0 on the season and 11-3 in his collegiate career. Saturday’s outing marked the ninth time McKay has struck out eight or more in his career. In his two starts this season, he has 16 strikeouts with just four walks and has surrendered only six hits and no runs in 14.0 innings. McKay, whose shutout streak has reached 19.0 consecutive innings dating back to last season, is 11-3 with a 1.55 ERA and 133 strikeouts in 110.2 career innings.
