Pitt’s Solomon, Tech’s Walz Named ACC Co-Wrestlers of the Week
Heavyweight Pair Downs Nationally-Ranked Wrestlers in 2016-17 Dual Meet Debuts
GREENSBORO, N.C.—Pitt redshirt junior Ryan Solomon and Virginia Tech senior Ty Walz were named Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Wrestlers of the Week after each turned in outstanding performances in their first dual match outings of the year.
Solomon, ranked 14th nationally and from Milton, Pennsylvania, pinned 16th-ranked Billy Miller at the 2:58 mark of the final bout of Pitt’s season-opening win over Edinboro. Solomon’s six points proved to be the deciding ones in Pitt’s 20-18 victory.
Walz, a senior ranked third nationally by InterMat, defeated 11th-ranked Jared Johnson of Chattanooga, 13-7, to lead the Hokies to a 26-9 win over the 24th-ranked Moccasins at the Moss Arts Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
They were chosen from a pool of nominees that included Joey Ward of North Carolina and Jack Mueller of Virginia.
Ward, a returning senior All-America for the Tar Heels from Cleveland, Ohio, captured three matches at the Journeymen/ASICS Collegiate Classic in Troy, New York. Ward decisioned Cole Martin of Wisconsin, 10-5, then scored a major decision over Evan Fidelibus of Rider (11-3) and then decisioned 19th-ranked Ronnie Perry of Lock Haven, 5-2.
Mueller, a freshman from Dallas, Texas, made a big impression in the first dual meet competition of his collegiate career. Wrestling at 125 pounds, Mueller defeated 20th-ranked Austin Assad of 11th-ranked Michigan, 7-4. He then defeated Brent Fleetwood of 17th-ranked Central Michigan, 8-4.
All four wrestlers will be competing in the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championship; which will be hosted by NC State at Reynolds Coliseum on Saturday, March 4. The one-day tournament will begin at 11 a.m.
