Quarterback Chad Voytik threw for 177 yards and one touchdown to lead Larry Fitzgerald's Blue Team past Aaron Donald's Gold Team by the score of 17-10 on Saturday in the 2015 Blue-Gold Spring Game.
The game was played in front of an over-capacity crowd of 5,325 fans at Highmark Stadium. In addition to Fitzgerald and Donald, the onlookers included Pitt and NFL greats Jim Covert, Curtis Martin and LeSean McCoy.
All of the game's points were scored in first half, while the Blue clinched the game in the final minutes with an interception in the end zone by Jalen Williams to secure the victory.
The majority of Voytik's yards were thrown to standout wide receiver Tyler Boyd. The Clairton native finished the game with six catches for 112 yards. Team Fitzgerald outgained Team Donald 241 to 223.
ACC Player of the Year James Conner had a 2-yard touchdown run that put the Blue ahead, 7-0, in the first quarter. Kicker Chris Blewitt then got the Gold on the board with a booming 55-yard field goal that went straight down the middle.
The Gold then took a 10-7 lead on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Adam Bertke to Zach Challingsworth with 3:21 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Blue took the lead for good with 8:14 to go in the second quarter as Voytik found Eijah Zeise on a 28-yard strike in the corner of the end zone, giving Team Fitz a 14-10 lead. Kicker Joel Reighard added a 28-yard field goal to make it 17-10 with less than a minute remaining in the half.
Qadree Ollison had a game-high 54 rushing yards for the Blue squad. Challingsworth had four catches for 79 yards and a score to lead the Gold team.
It looks like Virginia's quarterback battle will head into August undecided.
Greyson Lambert and Matt Johns each threw a touchdown pass and the Blue team beat the Orange squad 14-13 in Virginia's spring game Saturday.
There appeared to be little separation gained by either as Lambert, who started, completed 6 of 14 passes for 79 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and Johns was 11 of 23 for 66 yards. Lambert was sacked twice, and Johns once, and each led a field goal drive.
Offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild plans to watch plenty of film of spring practice before addressing the position with reporters.
