GREENSBORO, N.C. – Notre Dame’s Jon Gallagher has been named the ACC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Duke’s Robert Moewes was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Week.
Gallagher was named the most outstanding offensive player for the second straight tournament, leading Notre Dame to a tournament victory for the second straight season as the Offensive MVP of Indiana’s Adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. The junior forward from Dundalk, Ireland, scored two goals and added two assists for six points against top 25 foes Stanford and Cal over the weekend. Gallagher tallied the game-tying goal in the 86th minute against the defending NCAA champion Stanford on Friday, enabling the Irish to down the Cardinal 2-1 in double overtime. He then served the primary assist on the winning goal just 38 seconds into Sunday’s match against Cal, later adding a goal in the 13th minute and his second assist in the 67th minute of a 5-0 drubbing of the No. 22 team in the nation. Gallagher leads all Notre Dame players with four goals and three assists in the 4-0-0 start for the Irish, who moved up to the No. 1 spot in the NSCAA poll this week.
Moewes put on a goalkeeping clinic in helping Duke to a 1-0 upset over No. 9 UCLA Friday night in Los Angeles. The graduate student from Dortmund, Germany, made a season-high eight saves, five of which came in the second half, to earn his first shutout of the season. Moewes came up with two huge first-half saves on a couple of point-blank opportunities against the Bruins. He remains unbeaten as a Blue Devil with a 2-0-1 record and sports a 0.65 goals against average and a .882 save percentage.
