North Carolina Sweeps Final ACC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week Honors
Tar Heels shutout No. 8/5 Florida State and No. 7/9 Virginia
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Following wins over No. 8/5 Florida State and No. 7/9 Virginia, North Carolina sweeps the final weekly awards of the season as freshman forward Madison Schultz is this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week and senior defender Hanna Gardner is the Defensive Player of the Week.
Schultz scored a pair of game-winning goals as the Tar Heels beat a pair of Top 10 teams, giving North Carolina its first win over the Seminoles since 2011 and its first over the Cavaliers since 2010. Schultz had yet to score a goal in a Tar Heel uniform before she tallied on a rebound in the 39th minute to lift UNC past the Seminoles in the final regular-season game of the year. Three days later, Schultz again scored what proved to be the game winner in a 3-0 victory over Virginia in the ACC Championship quarterfinals as she stole the ball from Cavalier goalkeeper Morgan Stearns and knocked it in the empty net in the 39th minute.
Gardner led an outstanding defensive effort by North Carolina as it recorded back-to-back shutouts. The Chapel Hill, North Carolina, native led aTar Heel defensive unit that allowed only seven overall shots in each game by the Seminoles and Cavaliers, respectively.
The ACC Women’s Soccer Championship continues this weekend with the semifinals and finals being played at MUSC Health Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina.
