NC State’s Gwiazdowski Wins Second Straight National Championship

ACC Has All-Time High of 10 Wrestlers Earn All-American Honors; All Six ACC Teams Place in Top 28; ACC Records 20 Wins Against Higher-Seeded Wrestlers

GREENSBORO, N.C.—NC State junior Nick Gwiazdowski captured his second straight national title in the 285-pound class, leading the Atlantic Coast Conference to a record-setting performance at the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Championship at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.

The ACC had 10 wrestlers earn All-American honors led by Gwiazdowski and Pitt’s Tyler Wilps, who was the national runner-up at 174 by the barest of margins in a controversial ending.

The ACC’s six wrestling programs combined to produce a league-high 10 ACC wrestlers who have earned All-American honors. That betters by one the conference’s previous all-time high of nine that was set last year when it was a seven-team wrestling league.

Gwiazdowski, a junior from Delanson, N.Y., and the number one seed in the tournament, defeated Michigan’s Adam Coon, 7-6, the sixth-seed in the weight class. Gwiazdowski has now won 55 consecutive matches, including a perfect 35-0 mark this year.

He becomes only the third wrestler in ACC history with multiple national championships joining North Carolina’s T.J. Jaworsky, who won three straight from 1993 through 1995 at 134 pounds and Clemson’s Sammie Henson, who captured back-to-back titles in 1993 and 1994 at 118 pounds.

"This was an amazing accomplishment for Nick," said NC State head coach Pat Popolizio. "Defending his national title shows his dedication and desire to be the best in the country. Anytime you are defending the national title there is a lot of pressure and he kept his composure and confidence through it all. Our staff is extremely proud of the season he has had and excited for his future."

Wilps, a redshirt senior from Oakdale, Pa., who was the eighth seed in the 174-pound weight class, dropped a 5-4 decision to Penn State’s Matt Brown, the second-seeded wrestler at 174 in the championship match. Wilps had taken a 4-3 lead with 22 seconds remaining, but was assessed a stalling point and then a penalty point for locked hands with just three seconds remaining, allowing Brown to win the match and the title.

“It is what it is, said Pitt head coach Jason Peters. “It’s been interpreted differently all year and we fell subject to it. It is what it is,” said Peters following the match. “I’m disappointed for Tyler. I would have liked to see him have the opportunity to be a national champ.”

“We’re thankful for what he’s done for Pitt wrestling and I really hoped he could have finished with a national championship,” said Peters. “Unfortunately he didn’t. Hats off to Brown for what he was able to do, and he has a national championship in his senior year.”

Wilps, the Most Valuable Wrestler in the ACC Championships, earned his second straight All-American honor.

All six ACC schools finished among the top 28 teams in this year’s NCAA Championships, led by  Virginia Tech in 10th place with 56.0 points.  NC State (34.0 points) was next in 16th place, followed by Virginia (19th, 26.5), Pitt (21st, 23.0), North Carolina (24th, 18.0) and Duke (28th, 14.0).

Four Virginia Tech wrestlers earned All-American honors as redshirt senior Devin Carter (Christiansburg, Va.), the fourth seed, finished third at 141 pounds; unseeded redshirt junior Nick Brascetta (St. Paris, Ohio) finished fourth at 157 pounds; seventh-seeded sophomore Zach Epperly (Christiansburg, Va.) placed seventh at 174 pounds; and 10th-seeded Ty Walz finished seventh at 285.

Two NC State wrestlers earned All-America honors in Gwiazsdowski and unseeded freshman Kevin Jack (Danbury, Conn.) finished fifth at 141 pounds.

Duke, North Carolina, Pitt and Virginia each had one wrestler earned All-America honors.

Redshirt junior Conner Hartmann (Port Orchard, Wash.) of Duke, the Championship’s 10th seed at 197 pounds, repeated as an All-American.

Redshirt freshman Ethan Ramos (Hawthorne, N.J.) of North Carolina, the 16th-seed, finished sixth at 165 pounds. Ramos lost to Virginia senior Nick Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio) in the fifth-place match, 4-0, as Sulzer, the tournament’s fourth seed, claimed his second straight All-America citation.

Carter of Virginia Tech and Sulzer of Virginia became the 10th and 11th ACC wrestlers to become three-time All-Americans. Brascetta, Hartmann, Wilps and Gwiazdowski all earned their second All-American citations.

In all, ACC wrestlers recorded an impressive 20 victories over higher-seeded wrestlers in the NCAA Championship with Virginia Tech’s unseeded Nick Brascetta recording five upsets in the 157-pound class to finish fourth nationally and NC State’s unseeded Kevin Jack knotching four upsets in the 141 pound class to finish fifth.
