Wolfpack Grappler Keys Upset Win Over 14th-Ranked Pitt

GREENSBORO, N.C.—NC State freshman Michael Boykin (Coastesville, Pa.) was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week for his upset of Pitt’s Nick Bonaccorsi, a key victory in the Wolfpack’s  27-12 upset win over the nationally 14th-ranked Panthers last Saturday in Raleigh.

The ACC Wrestler of the Week honor is the first in Boykin’s career.

Unranked, Boykin downed the nationally 19th-ranked Bonaccorsi at 197 pounds to help secure the Wolfpack’s upset victory. Boykin decisioned Bonaccorsi, 6-1, allowing only an escape point in the second period. Boykin improves to 17-8 on the season, 13-6 in duals and 2-2 in ACC competition.

The win for Boykin marked his second straight over a ranked opponent as two weeks ago he downed 21st-ranked Kevin Beazley of Old Dominion (4-2).

Boykin was selected from among a group of four nominees that also included Virginia’s Nick Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio), the nation’s fourth-ranked wrestler at 165 pounds, who defeated seventh-ranked Nick Moore of Iowa in the Cavaliers’ loss to the No. 1-ranked Hawkeyes;  Duke’s Conner Hartmann (Port Orchard, Wash., the nation’s No. 7-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds, who recorded a pair ACC wins last week, defeating Chip Ness of North Carolina (6-0) and Jared Haught of Virginia Tech (7-4) to finish with a perfect 5-0 mark in ACC dual match competition; and North Carolina redshirt freshman Ethan Ramos (Hawthorne, N.J.),  ranked 11th nationally, who recorded a major decision over Duke’s Brian Dorsey (19-7) t 165 pounds, giving the Tar Heels what proved to be the match-winning point in a 16-15 victory.

Tickets for the 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championship, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh on Sunday, March 8, are on sale now.

The one-day tournament, which will take place at the Petersen Events Center, is the first ACC championship event hosted by the Panthers in school history.

Admission to the Petersen Events Center is $10 for adults and $5 for both youth 12-and-under and senior citizens. All tickets are general admission and can be purchased online, calling 800-643-PITT (7488), or visiting the Panthers Ticket Office located in the lobby of the Petersen Events Center. Tickets will also be available at the door on the day of the event. 

The ACC Wrestling Championship begins at 11 a.m. and the gates will open at 10 a.m.
